Where the timber comes from…
We use native timber that comes from woodlands that are FSC approved in
all our projects. FSC stands for Forestry
Stewartship Council and this certification indicates that the
products are sourced from woodlands that are well managed, preserve bio-diversity
and observe the rights of indigenous people amongst many other issues
(see their principles).
Some of our oak travels from as far as Germany, although all smaller,
curved pieces are sourced from local tree-surgeons in Northern Ireland.
The boat-quality European larch is grown in Northern England, while other
larch has been sourced from Shanes Castle on Lough Neagh. Hazel and willow
is coppiced within a 50 miles area of our workshop. All timber is air-dried
and seasoned naturally, i.e. not using any energy in condenser kilns.
Limited travel of the material together
with using traditional ways of processing it both limit the ecological
footprint of our boats.
